Low Water Garden

Published by Michelle at 12:53 am under Garden

I walked by this very cute garden the other day here in San Diego. It’s a good example of a low water, low maintenance garden. No grass here.

The larger succulent to the left is Aeonium ‘Kiwi’, the ground cover in the foreground is Senecio mandraliscae (Blue Finger), the grass in the front is Nassella tenuissima (Mexican Feather Grass) and there are a few dwarf Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax) in the back. The nassella gives a lot of soft texture and movement to the heavier succulents.

Senecio vitalis (Blue Chalk Fingers or Narrow-Leaf Chalk Fingers) was also used. You can see the contrast between the green and blue colors of the two different senecios. This garden is a really good use of mixing colors and textures of plant foliage as opposed to flowering plants. It makes for a green, in color and style, and easy to maintain yard. All but the nassella will keep their foliage color year round here in San Diego.
