Wicked Green Item of the Week……..Green Party Goods

Lots of us will be entertaining in the next couple of weeks. In the past, I’ve always felt that tinge of guilt throwing away all those paper plates. Even though they are paper, when they have absorbed food, they can’t be recycled. So here are some other options for wicked green entertaining.
One way to go is reusable plates and glasses. This is the most labor intensive, for the entertainer (or the dishwasher) but no dinnerware is thrown away. It also costs more, but you’ll have them for many parties to come. Recycled glass dishes are a classy choice, maybe better for the mature crowd. Viva Terra has some beautiful designs in all shapes and sizes. I love the sea glass collection. Pristine Planet, which I have mentioned in the past, gives you several options in one place. The companies listed there make dinnerware from recycled glass, bamboo and other sustainable, and/or compostable products. Compostable Goods is one of these companies. Their grenware line is virtually guilt-free. It’s reusable and compostable.
Recycled melamine is a newer product, and a little more affordable and kid friendly. Most of the dinnerware comes in really bright colors. The material is dishwasher safe but not microwaveable. It’s also pretty accessible- Confetti is a line sold at Target. Then, there’s Zak Designs. They have all kinds of styles made from recycled melamine. You can find stores on their website. I also found them on Amazon.
And last, but not least, there are the one time use products made from recycled, biodegradable or compostable materials. I, personally, would go for the biodegradable. Bare by Solo is becoming more available. They are available at some Target stores around the country (check the website). Their products are made from recycled and compostable materials. They can be composted at commercial facilities. Branch makes some very attractive and biodegradable party dinnerware. They sell them in kits for the number of guests you have, making the shopping simple.
